As part of their spiritual practice, many people petition God for whatever it is they are seeking, whether it be for healing, prosperity, or favour either for themselves or for others. These are their prayers and there’s certainly no underestimating the power of prayer. I have no doubt that God hears every prayer ever uttered or thought.
What I find however, is that for many people, praying is a one-way activity. They are talking at God, often quoting passages from sacred scriptures as though God needs reminding of His promises.
Those scriptures and promises are for us. He knows them already and I’m not sure He needs reminding.
Communication with God, as with anyone, needs to be two-way. Both parties need to speak and both parties need to listen. And I believe that God is always speaking to us. It’s just that we are too busy talking to actually listen and hear what He is saying.
So, how do you listen to God?
You get quiet. You stop talking.
Try meditating. Allow that still, small voice to be heard.
As Diana Robinson says:
“Prayer is when you talk to God; meditation is when you listen to God.”
