When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
It’s big. It’s scary. It is way, way, WAY out of your comfort zone. And if you are determined enough to step toward it anyway, you’ll actually find that it isn’t so big, it isn’t so scary, and your comfort zone will be bigger than you thought it ever could be.
“It” is your dream. Your vision. That thing that you’ve been longing to be, to do or to have for so long.
It’s a natural human trait to want to stay in the familiar, even if the familiar is making you miserable. Just think of the common saying of “Better the devil you know.”
It’s all about safety. To our subconscious, familiarity equals safety. What is unfamiliar equals danger.
Our imaginations are great at exaggerating the negatives and our imaginations love catastrophising.
But all it takes is just one step to realise that there is no catastrophe.
Each step toward your dream is a step of growth for you. Each step expands your comfort zone just that little bit more.
Take enough steps and you will be different. What you are comfortable with and what you are capable of will be that much bigger. And you’ll look back on all those imagined scenarios and those fears and wonder what the fuss was all about.
But you have to be willing to take that very first step.
